Everyone is working, your company is on target with production numbers, and all of a sudden the power goes out. A power failure can occur at any time and usually happens at the most inconvenience time. While you cannot always know when it is about to happen, you can be prepared for it. It does not mean that all work is halted and you can send your employees home. There are ways to keep production moving and continue the day just as it was going. Here are some ways you should handle a power failure at work.
Hook up the Generators
Having a generator on hand can be a great way to overcome a power failure in the workplace. There are many types of generators including large industrial generators and small portable ones. Whether you are working at a remote location or right there in the facility, you can use a generator to provide you power to continue working. Some generators run off electricity while others run off of gas. If you have a power failure, you want to make sure you have a generator that is going to run off of gas so you can use it when there is no electricity. These can be purchased from a hardware store (such as McFadden-Dale Industrial Hardware) and come in a variety of sizes.
Communicate with Employees
Most power failures are only going to last a short time. Instead of sending your employees home, you want to wait it out to see if the power comes back on quickly. Use the downtime to talk about upcoming events, production levels, policies, or other things that need to be discussed with the employees. make use of this time while you have all your employees together and their attention.
Put Safety First
While your generators will provide some lighting and energy to machines, you want to make sure you have plenty of flashlights available to your workers. This will help reduce the chance of injuries occurring during the power outage. Someone needs to be assigned to shut off the breakers just in case. You want someone who has been trained properly so you can avoid injuries like electrocution. If you have any employees on higher levels with disabilities, you need to have a way to get them to the main level safely. There should be a plan in place before a power outage ever occurs. In keeping safety at the forefront, you can avoid accidents due to the power outage.
